For the past several years, I have shared all my long form writing to substack. I have been writing essays and philosophy that sometimes bleed into literary nonfiction and memoir. Most of the writing I’ve done over the course of my career has been more heavily literary nonfiction and memoir, see for example Fucking Magic, as well as poetry. I love all these modes of writing and I love the writing I do here on substack; I also miss having other writing projects that take different forms.
I am currently working on a new perzine (as yet untitled), and a new book, tentatively titled THERE IS NO SAFETY IN THE BODY: ON LOVING WOMEN AND MY MOTHER. The zine I will release on my own, the book I am going to try to place with a press. (I am currently looking for a literary agent and/or publishers who are excited about independent, underground writing, and I’m going to sound like a broken record talking about this fact, because the squeaky wheel gets the grease etc., and I am not going to be cool and coy and secretive about my dreams and efforts. If you happen to have any leads or connections with agents or publishers who would be excited about my work, please get in touch.)
As I carve out more space in my writing practice for other projects, I will still be writing essays here. I am trying to strike the right balance, where I have enough space in my life for all the writing I’m working on. I don’t want to share these other projects freely on the internet in their entirety, because I want to save them for the final form they will take. However, I need to make money because I am a working writer with no other form of income. The balance I’ve chosen to strike here, is that, along with the essays that I will continue to write for this substack, I will share excerpts from these new projects and these excerpts will be entirely behind the paywall, in order to keep their audience small, before their real release. For free subscribers, don’t worry. There will still be lots of free writing here, and you can expect to see essays in the same form I’ve been writing, consistently here on substack.
For paid subscribers, these sneak previews of my work in progress on projects that I’m really excited about are a special thank you for your financial support, because that support is what makes it possible for me to have the time and space to do this writing. Without further ado, I present to you a piece I’m very proud of, that will appear in the new perzine series I’m writing. You will be able to tell from the title alone that I’m going back to my literary roots. Here it is:
