I went to my first AA meeting in the spring of 2012. I was ‘trying to take a break from drinking’ again and someone suggested I try AA. I went to a meeting and I loved it right away. I loved the sense of welcome, the kindness, the free cookies and coffee, and the way that everyone clapped for me even though I was objectively such a mess. As I continued to go to meetings I found that I loved the ritual, the tradition, the sense of belonging, the structure, and the hope that burned in me like an impossible flame.
